Cherkassy region

Cherkassy region is situated in the centre of Ukraine. Winters are snowy; summers are warm, sometimes hot. The territory was populated more than 100 000 years ago. Since 9th century Cherkassy region belonged to Kievan Rus. Since 1240 the area was deserted after the Mongol-Tatar invasion. The region was included into the Ukrainian SSR within the USSR, it’s been a part of Ukraine since 1991. The key area of development is crop production agriculture. The Dnieper River is the main river of the region. There are more than 2500 lakes and ponds stocked with crucian carp and common carp. Fishing tourism is well developed in the region. Cherkassy region is a historical centre of Ukraine. The famous Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko was born in Cherkassy region and here he was buried at the end of his life; Cossacks find their origin here; and the city of Chyhyryn was Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky’s homeland and his own private domain. Black Forest covers most of the region. One of the oldest trees in Ukraine known as the oak of Maxim Zheleznyak can be found here. This unique oak was included into Seventeen National Trees of Ukraine in 2010. Sofiivka arboretum is second to none in Ukraine on the score of its beauty and plant variety. Many places of worship dated back to the 18th and 19th centuries have been preserved here. Health resorts have been opened on the basis of radon waters of Zvenigorodka. Numerous recreation centres can be found on the Dnieper River banks. Health tourism is welldeveloped in the region.
