Khmelnitskaya region
Khmelnitskaya region is situated in the south-west of Ukraine. Winters are mild, summers are warm and humid. More than 120 of rivers and streams of 10 km long flow in the region, the biggest of them is the Dniester River. There are also up to 2000 of ponds and reservoirs. The Dniester reservoir is more than 200 km long and considered to be the largest reservoir in the region. People settled in the region in ancient times, more than 300,000 years ago. Since the 19th century the territory was a part of Kiev principality, Galicia-Volhynian principality, Lithuania, Poland, the Russian Empire, and Ukrainian SSR. Finally, it has been within Ukraine since 1991. The region is known for a well developed industry. The main industrial sector is Khmelnitsky nuclear power plant, and crop production agriculture. The history of the region is closely connected to the War of Ukrainian people led by Hetman Bohdan Khmelnytsky against Poland and peasants uprising led by U.Karmalyuk against Russian nobility in 1813-1835. These events are widely reflected in museums and monuments of the region. Educational tourism, museums, and sightseeing are well developed in the region. The city of Kamenets-Podolskiy is an open air museum most popular with tourists. The region has mineral and table water resources on the basis of which more than 20 health resorts and recreation centres are open. The health tourism is well developed in the region. Thousands of private holiday hotels and guest houses provide services and offer accommodation and good rest. The rural tourism, green tourism, and ecotourism are key development areas in the region.
