The Lutsk Castle is a symbol of the city of Lutsk, its main attraction and pride. The Upper castle was on the top of the hill as far back as in Rurikovich' time in the 11th century (it was first mentioned in a chronicle in 1075, at that time it was a fortified place which managed to stand the 6-month siege of Boleslaw the Brave. The castle was built as a typical European medieval feudal castle in 1340-1385 by Prince Lubart of Volyn. It was fortified in 1430-1542, in the time of Prince Svidrigaylo. On the territory of the castle you can see an underground gallery and museums of paintings, bells (the only museum in Ukraine), building ceramics, typography (an exposition of ancient books), and weapons. The Lutsk Upper Castle is regarded as one of the Seven Wonders of Ukraine.
