Volinsk

 
Volynskaya region, which is situated in the north-west of Ukraine, borders on Poland and Belarus. The area is flat and the forests, mainly pine groves, take up to 40 % of the area. The main rivers are the Western Bug and the Pripyat, but there are more than 100 little rivers there and very many lakes (more than 200). The region has food, agricultural, meat and diary and associated industries. The city of Lutsk is an administrative centre of the region. The main industrial factory is the Lutsk bearing plant.
Since the earliest times the region was a part of the Kievan Rus, later it was included into Galitsko-Volynskoe principality ruled by the Ryurikovich dynasty, then it became a part of Lithuania, Poland, and the Russian Empire, and finally it became a part of the Ukrainian Socialist Republic (since 1939). On the territory of the region you can find at around 1000 monuments of history, archaeology, architecture and town building. The main attractions of the city are the Lutsk historical and cultural museum (The Lutsk Castle), the estate museum of Lesya Ukrainka in the village of Kolodyazhnoye, a complex of Jesuit cloister in Lutsk, the Dormition Cathedral (dated 1160) and many other churches and cloisters. Places of interest which inherited traditions of Kievan Rus attract a lot of tourists. The Shatskiye lakes, in particular the lake of Svityaz, Pulemetskoe, Luki, Pesochnoe, enjoy well-deserved popularity
