Львовская область

Lvov region is situated in the west of Ukraine and borders on Poland. The region is located on the hilly uplands which enter the Eastern Carpathians in the south. The main rivers are the Bug River, the Dniester River and the Striy River. The Bug River flows into the Baltic Sea. The Dniester River and the Striy River are mountain rivers with fast currents and frequent floods, they flow into the Black Sea. Broadleaf forests cover 30% of the area; there are a lot of marshes and meadows. Summers are warm and humid, winters are mild with frequent thaws. The region produces more than 5% of agricultural production in Ukraine. The main natural resources of the region are gas, oil, and brown coal. The most famous enterprise of the region is the bus plant; timber and chemical industries are also developed. The region has been inhabited since ancient times and was alternately in the possession of Kievan Rus, Poland, Austria-Hungary, the USSR, and finally within Ukraine since 1991. There are more than 4000 historical monuments of architecture, urban planning, history, archeology, monumental arts, and churches of different religions. Lvov is the main city of the region; it takes the leading position in Ukraine in the number of historical monuments, especially the city’s ancient part which is considered to be a city-museum on its own. Travel services in the region are of the first class of the leading European countries. The dominating tourism is the following: museum tourism, educational tourism, mining tourism, environmental tourism, rural tourism, etc. In confirmation of well developed tourism business in the region is the first in Ukraine “Monument to Backpack” in Lviv.
