Since the 9th century the territory was a part of Kievan Rus, Lithuania, Poland, the Russian Empire, the Ukrainian SSR within the USSR, and finally it’s been a part of Ukraine since 1991. Forests cover up to 20% of the territory. Winters are mild and snowy, summers are warm and humid. It is mainly an agricultural region. The key development area in agriculture is meat and dairy. Every settlement of Chernigiv region dates back to the time of Kievan Rus. No wonder that more than 200 monuments of history and architecture of the region are of universal importance and prove an outstanding role and place of Chernigiv principality in forming of Kievan Rus and Ukraine. Education tourism and sightseeing are well developed in the region. Chernigiv almost has as many tourists’ attractions as Kiev does but the infrastructure related to the tourist business is still in development. There are hundreds of recreation centres developing fishing and health tourism on the banks on the main rivers: the Dnieper River, the Desna River, the Seyma River, the Ostra River.
